Netherlands supports Greenland, Denmark’s right to decide their future
In a message shared on social media, the Dutch foreign minister highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance in Arctic security and called for closer coordination among NATO partners in the region. He wrote: "Greenland plays a key role in safeguarding Arctic security. (The Netherlands) encourages dialogue and cooperation between NATO allies to further strengthen our security there. Concerning the future of Greenland it is up to Denmark & Greenland to decide," adding that the Netherlands "fully supports" its Danish partners.
The remarks follow repeated expressions from U.S. President Donald Trump about acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory under Danish sovereignty. He has previously indicated that he would not rule out the use of military force to achieve that goal.
According to reports, Trump revived the issue again on Sunday, just one day after a U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, arguing that control of Greenland is necessary for American security interests.
Denmark’s prime minister responded by urging Trump to “stop the threats.”
Across Europe, the statements from Washington have drawn firm pushback. Multiple European governments and the European Union voiced clear backing for Denmark and Greenland, rejecting the idea that the island’s status could be decided by external actors and underscoring the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
