Marches spark in Greenland to protest against US annexation push
The rallies followed recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said Washington would secure control of Greenland either “the easy way” or “the hard way,” arguing that the territory is vital for “national security.”
Footage circulating online showed thousands of demonstrators marching through Nuuk toward the US consulate. Protesters waved Greenlandic flags and raised signs declaring “Greenland is not for sale” and “We do not want to be Americans.” Some participants performed traditional tambourine dances, a cultural practice historically used to settle disputes.
Local authorities estimated that roughly 4,000 people joined the protest in Nuuk, a city with a population of about 19,000 to 20,000. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen was among the demonstrators, holding a placard reading “We shape our future.”
In Copenhagen, demonstrators expressed solidarity with Greenland, chanting “Kalaallit Nunaat,” the territory’s name in the Greenlandic language, and displaying banners stating “Hands Off Greenland” and “Greenland for Greenlanders.”
“I am very grateful for the huge support we as Greenlanders receive … We are also sending a message to the world that you all must wake up,” said Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, an organization representing Greenlanders living in Denmark. She added that “Greenlanders have involuntarily become the front in the fight for democracy and human rights.”
Greenlandic politician Erik Jensen echoed the sentiment, saying, “It’s very important that we stay together and show that Greenland is not for sale and we would not like to be an American or be annexed by the USA.”
