Chinese Media Mocks Washington’s Greenland Meme
On Saturday, the White House’s official account on X jumped on the online buzz surrounding the meme, which shows a solitary Adelie penguin leaving its group behind and heading toward far-off frozen peaks.
The account shared an AI-crafted image depicting Trump guiding the flightless bird by its wing across an icy plain toward the mountains, where Greenland’s flag stands planted. In its other wing, the penguin clutches an American flag. “Embrace the penguin,” the caption reads.
The spectacle quickly drew attention across social media. Xinhua replied by offering the White House a lesson in wildlife geography, pointing out that penguins do not inhabit Greenland, which lies in the Northern Hemisphere. The agency noted that only Galapagos penguins live north of the equator.
“Even if there are penguins in Greenland, it would be like this,” the Chinese reporters wrote, sharing an AI-generated clip portraying Trump in an Uncle Sam outfit, hauling a struggling penguin on a leash while gripping a baseball bat in his free hand.
The original ‘Nihilist Penguin’ image originates from German filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2007 Antarctica documentary, ‘Encounters at the End of the World,’ and only surged to viral fame online at the beginning of this year.
