Finland Talks with China on Trade, Relations, Ukraine

(MENAFN) Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said Tuesday that his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping focused on bilateral relations, trade, and the situation in Ukraine.

"China's support, or indirect support, for Russia is significant in that it undermines the relationship between the European Union and China, while also helping Russia continue this senseless war and killing," Orpo told reporters at the Finnish Embassy in Beijing.

"China and Xi can help bring peace to Ukraine at last," he added.

Orpo explained that the discussions concentrated on three main areas: bilateral relations, trade, and Ukraine. He highlighted the EU–China trade dynamic as "unbalanced," noting that China exports far more to Europe than Europe does to China and that unnecessary barriers still exist.

"We are here because China's global standing is rising ... It is important for Finland to engage with the Chinese and understand their perspective," Orpo said.

The Finnish leader also raised human rights concerns and emphasized the importance of a rules-based, multilateral international order, mentioning that Taiwan was discussed briefly.

Orpo’s official visit to China, running from January 24 to 29, also saw Finnish companies sign 11 trade agreements with Chinese partners, according to reports. The visit comes amid a tense period in transatlantic relations over various disputes, including Greenland, where Finland was among eight European nations threatened with tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
